Mogelijkheden voor steun godsdienstvrijheid vergroot

Voortaan kunnen organisaties die werken aan godsdienstvrijheid in alle landen steun krijgen van Nederland. Dat heeft minister Koenders toegezegd in reactie op een motie van ChristenUnie-Kamerlid Joël Voordewind. Op dit moment ondersteunt Nederland alleen projecten voor godsdienstvrijheid in negen geselecteerde landen.

Daardoor is er momenteel geen ondersteuning voor projecten buiten China, Egypte, India, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Sudan, Pakistan, Noord-Korea en Armenië. Die ruimte komt er dus wel.

Joël Voordewind is blij met de toezegging van minister Koenders. “Organisaties als Open Doors, Jubilee Campagin, SDOK en Mensen in Nood kunnen daardoor ook verzoeken om ondersteuning in andere landen indienen waar de godsdienstvrijheid onder druk staat.” 

Voordewind constateert dat er ook in andere landen veel mensen zijn die juridische ondersteuning en steun voor familieleden nodig hebben. “Hopelijk kunnen we hiermee mensen die vanwege hun geloof in de gevangenis zitten beter helpen. Ik denk aan Asia Bibi die in Pakistan vastzit en Saeed Abidini in Iran.”
